How to optimize your Showit website for SEO

You’ve crafted a stunning Showit website, and it’s time to share it with the world. Boosting your site’s presence on Google through SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can help you attract more visitors and, in turn, more clients!

In this article, I’ll guide you through Showit’s built-in SEO tools and show you how to use them to climb the rankings. Let’s jump in!

What is SEO?

SEO, short for Search Engine Optimization, involves a bunch of techniques to help your website climb higher in Google’s organic (free) search results. Did you know that about 31% of all Google clicks go to the first result? Of course, you’d want your site to grab some of that attention too!

Let’s start with an important reminder: SEO is more of a marathon than a sprint. Anyone promising quick SEO miracles is likely not being honest, and you’re better off steering clear of them.

SEO is about long-term investment, and it might take several months before you see those results. But don’t worry, because once your site starts climbing, expect a rise in both visitors and potential clients!

The best way to approach it is to break down your efforts across the 3 pillars of SEO:

  • Content
  • Technical
  • Authority

Pillar 1: Content

To kick things off, you’ll want to craft unique, valuable content that aligns with your target keywords on Google. For instance, if ‘photographer in New York’ is your keyword, make sure your site content reflects it.

Here’s what your content should include:

Website texts

Your website’s text is key to ranking well on Google. Think about it: Google is all about search, and you want to be at the top of those search results. Are you a wedding photographer in Chicago? Then focus on search terms like “wedding photographer Chicago”.

Don’t just guess though; start with a keyword analysis to back up your keyword choice with data. A great tool I recommend for this is UberSuggest.

Next up, write your website text with SEO best practices in mind. You could DIY, or hire a pro SEO copywriter.

Page titles and meta descriptions

Don’t overlook SEO titles & meta descriptions on your web pages. These are the titles and snippets Google displays on the search engine results page:

I’ll explain later how to set these up in Showit.

Optimizing your images

Your content isn’t just about your website copy – it’s images, too. Optimize your images for SEO, so Google knows what they’re about. You can read all about that in my other blog!

Pillar 2: Technical

Great content is a solid foundation, but your site also needs to be technically sound to rank well. Here’s what that involves:

Website speed

In short, you want your website to load under 3 seconds. A huge factor that slows down your website are images. Check out this blog on how to check your website’s speed and how to make it load faster.

Security

It’s vital to lock down your site with an SSL certificate. You’ll spot a secure site with ‘HTTPS’ in the URL, or that trusty green/locked icon. Not only does a secure site reassure clients when you’re collecting data, but it also gives your SEO a fabulous boost!

Website structure & usability

Your site should be intuitive and user-friendly. Here’s how to make sure it’s set up for success:

  • Organize your site with a clear hierarchy in both your pages and text. Think of it like a story where each section naturally leads to the next.
  • Ensure your website is easy to navigate. If your visitors can find their way quickly, they’re more likely to stick around!
  • Don’t forget to optimize your website for mobile devices.

With my Showit website templates, you’ll have all the SEO essentials built in, making your launch a unique and strategic website effortlessly!

Pillar 3: Authority

Think of website authority as your online reputation – it’s how Google measures the trustworthiness and expertise of your site. You want your website to be the go-to destination in your field.

How is website authority measured?

Here’s how search engines get a sense of your website’s authority:

  • How long your domain has been around
  • The amount of traffic your site attracts
  • The number and quality of backlinks you earn

If you’re launching a brand-new website, this pillar is going to be super important for you. Your domain’s fresh, and you’re just starting to attract visitors. But no worries—every successful journey starts somewhere, and with a little focus, you’ll build that authority in no time!

How to increase your website authority

Try these methods to boost your authority:

  • Write SEO-friendly blogs that establish you as the go-to expert in your niche.
  • Use social media to promote your site.
  • Collect reviews on your Google Business Profile.
  • Engage in link building: both link to reputable sites and have them link back to you.

Adding titles & meta descriptions to pages

In Showit, you can easily add titles and descriptions to each page. Here’s how:

1. Choose the page you want to add the metadata for.

Input your SEO elements in the ‘SEO settings’ on the right side. You can add:

    • Page Title & Meta Description
Go for a catchy title and crisp description to set expectations, and weave in your keyword (e.g., ‘Wedding Photographer in New York’)..
    • Share Image
Pick the image displayed when sharing a page link on social media (for blog posts, it’s the WordPress featured image). Don’t skip this – it’s great for drawing social media visitors!

Header Tags

Your web pages have a structure made up of titles, sub-heads, and paragraphs. To help Google understand this, we use header tags of text tags.

Think of text tags as an outline of your text hierarchy, where h1 is the key player:

  • h1: page titles (max. 1 per page!)
  • h2: headings
  • h3: subheadings
  • p: paragraphs
  • div: design elements
  • nav: navigation items

How to add header tags in Showit

Showit does the heavy lifting by auto-adding header tags when you include a text block. Add a title and it’s tagged as <h1>.

You can always adjust the tags by going to Text Properties > Advanced on the right hand side in the Showit editor.

Adding alt-text to images

Boosting your SEO also includes optimizing your images. Since Google can’t ‘see’ images, it’s your job to give them a voice. Think of it this way – every picture deserves a quick and catchy description.

Best practices for writing alt-text

Here are some friendly tips from Google to write good alt-texts:

  • Keep it short but descriptive. Instead of just saying ‘puppy’, go for something like ‘puppy playing with a ball’.
  • Stick to 1 or 2 sentences max.
  • You don’t need to start with ‘Image of’ (like ‘Image of a labrador puppy’), but definitely mention if it’s a logo or an illustration.
  • Sprinkle in keywords, but keep it natural – don’t cram them in. Avoid something like ‘puppy dog pup labrador jack russell german shepherd dogs’.
  • If the image isn’t adding any value to your page or blog, it’s okay to skip the alt-text.
