What is SEO,
and why should you care?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization – and it’s all about helping your website rank higher in Google’s free (organic) search results, with the goal of getting your site at the top of search results. In other words: it’s how you go from being buried on page 10 to showing up on page 1 (ideally in that top spot).

And it matters. A lot.

In 2025, roughly 40% of clicks go to very first organic result on Google. The second and third spots get another 18.7% and 10.2% - which means the top three organic search results together pull in nearly 70% of all clicks. In short? If your site is buried on page 2 (or worse), your dream clients may never know you exist.

SEO isn’t just a "nice to have" - it’s your golden ticket to getting found by the right people. When your Showit SEO is solid, search engines can quickly figure out what your site’s about and bump you higher in the rankings for the keywords that matter. That means more traffic to your site, more chances to connect with the right people, and - yep - more business!

And the good news is: with the right strategy (like the one I’m sharing in this guide), it’s totally doable!

The three pillars of SEO

✍🏻 Content

= what you say on your site.
The words on your website matter. Not just for storytelling and connection, but for showing up in Google too!

01.

What this involves:

Use keywords naturally in key places

Write for humans and answer your target audience's questions

✅ Include internal and external links in your website content

✅ Regularly update your site with fresh content

02.

= how your site runs.
Great content is a solid foundation, but your site also needs to be technically sound to rank well in Google.

⚙️ Technical SEO

What this involves:

✅ Website speed (you want your site to load in < 3 seconds)

Optimize images for SEO

✅ Having a secure website (HTTPS)

✅ Optimal website structure & user experience

Mobile optimization

03.

🥇 Authority

= how trustworthy your site seems to Google. If you're just launching your site, this pillar is key. Your domain is new, traffic is low, and it might feel like you're shouting into the void. But hang in there - every successful site started somewhere.

What this involves:

✅ Blog regularly about topics your audience is searching for

Link to other quality sites and try to get linked back in return

✅ Ask your happy clients to leave Google reviews

Share your website to drive traffic

But hold up

Always do this first

01. Define your keywords

Let’s take a quick step back - because before you dive into content creation or Showit settings, there’s one thing that shapes everything else: keywords. 🔍

Think about what your dream clients are searching for. These are known as search terms - specific words or phrases people type into Google. Is it “newborn photographer Chicago”? Or maybe “interior designer in Texas”? Those are your keywords - and they need to be sprinkled naturally throughout your site.

But not just any keyword will do. Some are super broad and very competitive - like “photographer” or “SEO tips”. These are tough to rank for, especially if you're not a big-name site.

Instead, focus on low-competition, high-relevance keywords. These are longer, more specific search phrases like “best family photographer in Chicago” or “Showit templates for life coaches”. These might get less search volume, but they’re way easier to rank for - and more likely to attract your actual ideal client.

And remember: while keywords are essential, the real magic happens when your content builds trust. Write for humans, be genuinely helpful, and Google will follow.

💡 Pro tip

My favorite SEO tool for keyword research:

Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest

So how do you actually find those magical keywords without just guessing? Use a tool like Ubersuggest.

It’ll show you what people are typing into Google, how often those terms are searched, and how competitive they are. You’re looking for that sweet spot: keywords that have a decent number of searches but aren’t so competitive that you’d be buried under big-name websites.

Once you’ve got a few solid long-tail keywords, work them into your content naturally:

Headlines
✅ Service descriptions
✅ Blog posts
✅ Page titles + meta descriptions
Alt-text on images

02. Plan your site structure

A good-looking website is great - but if it’s confusing to navigate, people (and Google) won’t stick around. That’s where site structure comes in.

Once you know your keywords, the next step is figuring out where all your content should live. Before you start designing or writing anything, you’ll want to zoom out and plan the big picture. Ask yourself:
  • What pages do I actually need? (e.g. Home, about, services, blog, contact)
  • What kind of content belongs on each page?
  • How should visitors move from one page to another?

Think of your site like a book: each page is a chapter, and the flow should feel smooth, logical, and intentional. This helps people navigate your site easily - and it helps search engines understand it too.

03. Optimize your images before uploading them into Showit

Images are essential for storytelling and visual impact, but they’re also the biggest culprit when it comes to slow-loading websites. And a slow site? Not great for SEO.

Here’s how to prep your images before uploading them into Showit:

✅ Resize your images appropiately

Compress before uploading with tools like TinyJPG

✅ Choose the right format - JPEG for photos, PNG for transparent graphics, and SVG for icons/logos

Avoid oversized animations or videos – unless they’re essential, skip them or host video externally (like on Vimeo or YouTube).

Now, let's dive into

Showit SEO tools

Alright, now that you’ve got the SEO foundations in place - your keywords, your content strategy, your image prep - it’s time to roll up your sleeves and actually put it into action inside Showit.

Let’s walk through how to use Showit’s built-in SEO tools to make your site Google-friendly!

Add page titles & meta descriptions

Your page title and meta description are the preview text snippets people see in Google before they even click your website. If they’re clear, enticing, and keyword-rich? You’ve got a much better shot at ranking first and getting more clicks.

How to add page titles & meta descriptions in Showit:

1. Select the page and open the SEO Settings panel on the right side of your screen

2. Fill out the following:

✅  Page Title
Include your main keyword (e.g. “Wedding Photographer in Chicago”), ideally near the beginning. Keep it under 60 characters so it displays well on all devices. Here are some expert-backed tips on writing strong SEO page titles.

✅  Meta Description
Write a short, compelling description (under 155 characters) that explains what the page is about and encourages to click. Include your keyword naturally. Make sure to check out these tips on how to write a good meta description.

✅  Share Image
This is the preview image that appears when someone shares your page on social media. Choose something eye-catching and relevant to the page content.

Add header tags to structure your text

Your web pages are built from titles, subheadings, and paragraphs - and to help Google understand what’s what, we use header tags (also called text tags).

Think of header tags like an outline for your content. They help Google quickly scan and understand the structure of your page. The most important content should be at the top (H1), with supporting points beneath it (H2, H3, etc.).

Text tags & what they're used for:

H1: Page titles (use only one per page!)

H2: Section headings

H3: Subheadings

P: Paragraphs (your body content)

DIV: Design elements (that don't really add value to your content)

NAV: Navigation menu items

How to Edit header tags in Showit:

Showit does a lot of the heavy lifting for you. For example; when you add a title in Showit, it automatically tags it as an <h1>.

That’s great as a starting point, but it’s still a good idea go in and double-check your header tags.

To do that, just select your text box, then head to Text Properties > Advanced on the right-hand side of the Showit editor. A few quick tweaks here can make a big impact!

Add alt-text to your images in Showit

Google can’t see images the way humans do, so it relies on alt text (short written descriptions) to understand what an image is about. Alt text also improves accessibility for screen readers, so it’s a win-win!

To add alt-text to images in Showit, simply click on the image and fill in the Alt Text field on the right side in your Showit editor.

Plus, here are some friendly tips from Google to write good alt-texts:

✅ Keep it short but descriptive. Instead of just saying "puppy", go for something like "puppy playing with a ball".

✅  Stick to 1 or 2 sentences max.

✅  You don’t need to start with ‘Image of’ (like "Image of a labrador puppy"), but definitely mention if it’s a logo or an illustration.

✅  Sprinkle in keywords, but keep it natural - don’t cram them in. Avoid something like "puppy dog pup labrador jack russell german shepherd dogs".

✅  If the image isn’t adding any value to your page or blog, it’s okay to skip the alt-text.

Common Showit SEO mistakes to avoid

When optimizing your Showit site for SEO, it's important to steer clear of some common pitfalls that can hurt your search engine rankings and user experience. Here are key mistakes Showit users often make - and how to avoid them:

❌ Ignoring SEO settings while duplicating pages

A lot of Showit users duplicate pages to save time on design - but here’s the catch: it also duplicates your SEO settings, like meta titles and descriptions. If you forget to update them, you could end up with duplicate content that confuses search engines.

The fix is simple: every time you duplicate a page, update its SEO title, meta description, and share image. Your rankings will thank you!

❌ Putting text inside images

A common SEO slip-up is putting text, keywords, or calls to action inside images instead of using real text on the page. Google can’t read text that’s part of an image, so that content won’t help your rankings.

Plus, it’s not great for accessibility since screen readers can’t pick up on text inside images, making it tougher for visually impaired users to get the info. To keep your content SEO-friendly and easy for everyone to access, always use actual text instead of embedding them in images!

❌  Don't do this: embedding text in images
✅ Do this instead: add image + text separately
